Teacher layoff protest
On Wednesday June 1, there was a City Council media conference on New York City education budget cuts. On the steps of City Hall council members, community leaders, parents and the UFT president protested the recommended teacher layoffs.

During the City Council’s media conference parent Noah Gotbaum questioned why Mayor Bloomberg “can’t find the money to keep teachers in our $23 billion budget”?
At a cursory glance, City Council members were able to recommend the below budget cuts:
- Reduction of teacher recruitment contract
- Reduction of Department of Education press office spending
- Merger of the Office of Community and Office of Public Affairs
- Reduction of employees in the Office of Family Information and Action
- Consolidation of superintendents and school support organization staff
- Reduction of over estimation of budget spending per year
- Reduction of student transportation spending
- Reduction of some legal services
- Reduction of technology spending
- Reduction of contract spending for professional development
